The Megamodel

Despite her diva antics Naomi Campbell is in demand more than ever before. What is her secret that keeps designers coming back?

English born Naomi Campbell first started modelling at the tender age of 15. Her striking beauty took the industry by storm and she landed the cover of French Vogue when she was only 18 – the first black woman to ever do so.

The 90’s saw the inception of the ‘Supermodel’. After starring in George Michael’s ‘Freedom’ music video clip Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer formed an elite group of models declared “supermodels” by the fashion industry. With the addition of then ‘newcomer’ Kate Moss, they were collectively known as the ‘Big Six’.

In January 1990 Naomi was declared “the reigning megamodel of them all” by Interview Magazine and the following year she featured on TIME’s September cover – another first for a black woman.

Throughout the 90’s and the noughties Naomi worked with the world’s top design houses including Versace, Vivienne Westwood and her friend and mentor, designer Yves Saint Laurent.

Naomi’s striking features also caught the attention of people outside the fashion industry. Music icon Michael Jackson cast her in his music video, and other famous men took notice. Over the years, Naomi has had relationships with Robert De Niro, Mike Tyson, Usher and most recently Russian billionaire Vladimir Doronin.

When quizzed on the secret of her success in March 2014, Naomi told Mail Online “In order to stand the test of time you have to be someone who can change and reinvent yourself and you must have a personality! But most importantly, you have to love what you do in an authentic way.”

On sharing the best advice industy pros  have given her over the years Naomi says “Do not to do anything half way. Also don’t try to imitate anyone—just be the best you can be. Remember whom you’re working for and always do things with integrity.” Sage advice any newcomer should heed if they want a career as long as Naomi’s.
